Establishment of the Council.

The Establishment of the Council dates back to the 22nd of January, 1987 when the Decree No.3 was signed by the then President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida in March 1988 thus offering the decree to now become an Act of Parliament cited as CAP 431 LFN, 1990 now CAP T7 LFN, 2004. TOPREC inauguration took place on the 30th of November, 1988 and the Council has since been putting a facelift to the profession of Physical Planning.

Mission

To ensure that only qualified persons are accredited, registered and eligible to practise Urban and Regional Planning in accordance with the law and provide service in line with best practice worldwide.

Functions of TOPREC

The Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria (TOPREC) in accordance with the act (CAP T7 LFN 2004), of 1988 is charged with the general duty of:-

  • determining who are Town Planners.
  • determining what standards of knowledge and skills are to be attained by persons seeking to become members of the profession of Town Planning and reviewing those standards from time to time as circumstances may require;
  •  securing the establishment and maintenance of a register of persons, entitled to practice the profession and the publication from time to time of lists of those persons;
  •  regulating and controlling the practice of the profession in all its ramifications;
  • maintaining, in accordance with the Decree No. 3 of 1988, of discipline; and
  •  performing such other functions which in its opinion are calculated to facilitate the carrying out of its activities.
